"About the time we think we can make ends meet, somebody moves the ends."
-Herbert Hoover

Isn't that the truth. Just like the phrases "come to the end of your rope" or "scraping the bottom of the barrel"... I've been there! and the rope is elastic, or more length appears. And barrels can have false bottoms and you never seem to reach the bottom.

But then ... there's a "light at the end of the tunnel", and I'm not so focused on where the end or bottom is.

For us to think we even know the "bottom" or "end" presupposes that we know the future. If we did we would probably go insane because the challenges would be more than we could take. The end and the bottom would be much further and deeper than we could conceive of going. But the human spirit somehow rises to the challenge relying on faith to make it through.

This was said by Monte in an email edit to me, so I'm posting it for him.
